Before long, he was mastering music by The Beatles, The Allman Brothers, Cream and Jimi Hendrix, a prelude to his Borscht Belt beginnings. “The bass player in the school band left so I started practicing on the bottom four strings of a guitar until my uncle gave me my first double bass.,” he said. Nowinski’s instrument of choice was the trumpet until junior high school. “Family members would come over and we’d rehearse and perform together,” he fondly recalled. ![]() His uncle was a violinist for the New York Philharmonic and his grandmothers played the viola and piano. His father taught music at Beach Channel High School and his mother, at P.S. The accomplished percussionist spent a good part of his youth playing instruments. “Such a mellow place to grow up,” he added. When asked about his childhood, the Neponsit transplant is quick to reminisce about his school days at West End Temple, the YMCA summer camp he attended with hordes of neighborhood kids and the countless carefree days running around the beach.
